The Blues started in the waning years of Old #7 and when Memphis State University was weak. The goal was to form a team comprised of MSU and club players so together the two would be complementary and stronger in the long run. The club adopted the name Memphis Blues and adopted colors that would be consistent with the University of Memphis theme.
The club took off and was very successful initially because of excellent leadership and coaching. However, the coach had a job transfer out of town and the club struggled for a while. They have since become very stable and remain very competitive.

One of the most successful ventures of the Blues has been the Elvis 7s Rugby Tournament held in August each year. The tournament brings teams from up to 300 miles away and includes club, collegiate, high school, and even middle school teams. Men’s and women’s teams are involved and the event is praised by all in attendance.
